Stefan,

My idea of what Val's saying is that in BSL, for example, the close-close
would be like a signing a bird chirping with its
beak, whereas the close-open-close (though with the middle finger added to
the handshape) would be like signing putting clothes on a washing line with
spring-loaded clothes pegs.

They're different speeds but it's also a question of what sort of
deliberation is involved?
