SignWriting List
November 17, 2005

Hello Kathleen and Everyone!
Thank you for this message...smile...

Yes...Your method for quick corrections in SignPuddle is a great
idea...to rename the first one to number 4, then make the change and
the change is then added as the first one in the List...That is
faster...you are right!

Great...

But regarding keeping the old in-correct spellings after
that...although it is interesting to see some of the commonly-made
mistakes of writers, I think it is confusing to keep signs that are
trying to write the exact same sign, but the first is correct and the
second is not...A beginner from another country might come into your
SignPuddle and copy the second one into their SignPuddle, and then
they have copied mistakes...and it is harder to change them later
because they have to re-learn...just as you have experienced...

It depends on how you see your SignPuddle used...for history or for
everyday use...

We have a lot of signs that are incorrect in our ASL SignPuddle and I
have been concerned about people copying the mistakes thinking they
were correct...so I keep hoping I can go in and fix some of them!

For me, I would do everything you list below, Kathleen, but once the
new sign is added, I would go back to Dictionary Editors, ask for
that sign again, and then delete the incorrect ones so only correct
spellings are in the SignPuddle...just a thought...

I like your new spelling for Aalst...well written!!

Val ;-)
