American kids start learning letters and numbers early, age 3 if they go 
to preschool, and may see simple words soon after that.  More for them to 
start connecting that these strange symbols on paper mean something as the 
first step toward reading and writing.  Of course that's for hearing 
children learning English.  My school does not (yet... ::grin:: I'm 
working on it) teach signwriting.  BUT I see no reason why it would be 
different.

Hm..

In our classes, we don't teach so early. We give the SW lesson to 5 
years old minimum. As the writting language, we don't teach or make 
read the children any text (SW or writting language) before teh age of 
5. In my opinion, it is too early for teaching SW to kids of 3-4 years 
old !
