Steve,

It would seem to me that it would take a fairly simple change in your  
reading routines to tell it that the first element in a compact string  
is the lane followed by the symbol information. I guess I am wondering  
why you would consider it easier to do it after instead of before?  
Then the XML and the compact versions can be relatively identical in  
their structures.
