My seconds to all on this list. My name is Charles Butler and I give my own personal gratitude to Valerie Sutton who has worked with programmers throughout the years to make this system available to everyone.

  1) I was priveleged to represent Sign Writing and Dance Writing at a symposium in New York City when Valerie was not able to attend a conference more than 20 years ago. With our little Apple-II-e program we were able to wow the socks off the people at the conference. All of their systems were based on labanotation, which can show intensity of movement, and specific kinds of choreography, but nothing as flexible as Dance Writing or as immediately accessible as even the Apple-II-e program was.

With that program (the precursor to the SignWriter program) one could type sign, type English (or Danish), change that English with a swipe of a key to fingerspelling, and show piece by piece a comparative grammar between English Roman letters and ASL signs....and that was many years ago. I miss that little program.

  2) Since then I have traveled to Brazil (Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre, Florianopolis, and Pelotas), and seen SW in action and being widely accepted for everyday use. My hope and dream is to see it used with the TISLR conferences to show how much easier linguistic concepts can be shown when one has a clear graphic representation of movement. One can say in five words and a picture what now takes 150 words and still isn't clear.

  3) I am overwhelmed with Valerie's generosity, and Steve's persistence in getting this symbol set into a workable set of principles for Sign Writing so that we can truly start creating comparative dictionaries, stories, newspaper articles, and other expressions in the living signed languages of the world.

  4) Valerie is truly a living Sequoia, bringing living languages into print in a way that will go into history. We are all ripples in her pond.

SignWriting List
October 21, 2008

Hello SignWriting List!

And thank you Steve, for your message below. Thank you for the kind
words. And thank you for collaborating with me, to make this historic
moment possible.

There are two big announcements today.

FIRST...The International SignWriting Alphabet (ISWA 2008) is official!

The ISWA became the official symbolset for SignWriting around the
world, yesterday, October 20, 2008!

The ISWA is now installed in all SignPuddle software products. I will
be reviewing all the SignPuddle products here on the SignWriting List
over the next few days...

The free online version of SignPuddle is used daily by hundreds of
sign language users.

When you use SignPuddle Online, you are using the ISWA 2008 symbols:

Most of you may not realize that you are using the ISWA, but you are.
Whenever you use SignPuddle Online, it is there for you, in SignMaker
and SignText.

The ISWA is the culmination of my 35 years developing SignWriting. As
you know, the first SignWriting document ever written was in 1974 at
the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. SignWriting became my life's
work from that moment on, and will be for the rest of my life.

Without all of the wonderful SignWriting users around the world, of
course SignWriting could not be what it is today....so THANK YOU to
all of you, for your feedback and your use of the writing
system...Your input has made the ISWA 2008 possible too.

I hope my gift of the ISWA to the world will be useful for generations
to come...

I will announce the second announcement next message...it is new
software for your desktop, called the PersonalPuddle.

Thank you once again, Steve, for your remarkable software that made
the ISWA 2008 official!

Val ;-)
