SignWriting List

Hello Maria and Everyone!

Smile...The larger American continent, which includes South America,
Central America, and North America is huge, that is for sure. And
there must be hundreds of sign languages, many of them not known, in
such a big area of the world.

As far as North America goes, I believe three countries are considered
a part of North America...Canada, the US and Mexico. Those were the
three countries that signed the North American Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA), for example.

Within the United States, we have 50 states and several territories.
Each state has its own government, and then we are tied together by a
Federal government in Washington DC.

And yes...the US spans a large area. Ron Dettloff and the Deaf Church
in Michigan are around 3000 miles away from where I live in
California...We are on the opposite sides of the US from each other.

And Nancy Romero, Lucinda O'Grady Batch and Adam Frost are all members
of the DAC, the Deaf Action Committee for SignWriting, and we all live
in Southern California, in Northridge area, and in San Diego, near
Mexico.

Cherie Wren, who wrote, among others, Cat in the Hat in ASL, is
located in Georgia, and there are signwriters all over the US now...

So you can read about SignWriting in the US:

Now...none of that really matters, since we are all connected by the
internet! Isn't life wonderful, the way we can work together anywhere
in the world, because of our computers and the internet.

Regarding the writing of the translation of Bible passages into
American Sign Language...I know of two projects using SignWriting:

Shores Deaf Church Translation from the King James' Version (English
Bible)

read about them on the web:
http://www.signwriting.org/usa/michigan/deafchurch.html

or read their documents on the web:

Webmaster: Jerry Spillman

or visit the ASLBible Puddle:

The Romero Translation is being done here in Southern California. The
ASL Editor is Lucinda O'Grady Batch, for the Romero Translation. There
has been interest by an important Deaf group to possibly help with
editing the Romero Translation in the future and that is great
too...so things are always evolving! you can visit the Romero
translation here:

And Maria, I am running behind, but I would honored to post your
documents too someday, on that web page...

Val ;-)
