Yes, it does, but placing it on the same side isn't clear exactly what  
the thumb is doing. It is just a choice that was done to make it  
easier to read which is what we really want. I mean, the same thing  
can be argued with other written forms of other languages. They follow  
certian conventions even when it doesn't perfectly match across the  
board. Take a look at English. How many times have people said that  
something doesn't make sense? So that is where we are at now. You can  
take what you want with it. Just make sure it is clear to the reader  
what you are doing if you are expecting your writings to be read by  
others. :-)
