Keyboarding and updating old and new SW software

I'm really looking forward to being able to keyboard SW - and I love the idea of a flexible keyboard. I'm not a programmer so I can't speak to how hard it would be, but I hope some flexibility could be built into it.

I go back to the days of programmable macros for Lotus 1-2-3 and with a lot of preliminary thought on how it could be set up, a programmable macro would work for any particular language. A flexible keyboard would be a challenge, but could be made using that principal, but would really have to be designed by a group of people working in that language. Changing it on the fly constantly makes for a programming nightmare.

          Hi Steve,

Having a keyboard would be great. I remember using it MSDos. However what
are the possibilties of having a keyboard where you could choose the
symbols you need at hand. Where the user could assign keys depending on
what he needs. Since different sign languages use different symbols (have
different signwriting alphabets), every language, after identifying the
most important symbols used, would be free to assign keys on the keyboard
depending on the frequency of use. For e.g if in LSM I have not yet
encounterd a sign with a handshape from Group 7: Ring Finger, therefore I
would not need it on my keyboard and could leave this group out, and if
say in Group 5, LSM only uses 7 handshapes in all - then all the others
need not be assigned to the keyboard. And the same could be done for every
          sign language.

Of course, I have absolutely no idea whether this can actually be done in
technical terms. It's just an idea.

          Maria
