embedding ASL in pdf/html

Can you explain the difference to me between these two tools?  I see
some minor visual variation, but I'm not sure what distinguishes them.
What would I use each of them for?

Thank you for being so willing to help me through this process, I
realize my questions are very basic.  If I've just missed a pointer
to the documentation, I'm happy to be notified of that fact instead.
