You are right! These are amazingly good illustrations, based on an animated figure, that goes for many pages in the "Cross-Linguistic Guide to SignWriting", by Steve and Dianne Parkhurst. Attached is one page of Eyes…page 128 in the book….

I think it is wonderful that Steve and Dianne Parkhurst have illustrated so many Facial Expressions. Thank you, Steve and Dianne! 

Most of the illustrations are easy to see, although, if you took away the symbol they are trying to represent, and asked someone to look at the animated figure's face, and tell us what the animated face was doing, you may find that we would get different answers from different people - 

For example, in the attached diagram, can you see a difference, in the animated figure's face, between Squinted Eyes and Half Closed Eyes? I think it is the same figure, which is understandable, because they are similar, but I see those two symbols as representing "a different feeling" to the eyes…and to capture that feeling is hard…It is my hope we can develop better descriptions of Facial Expressions in the future...
