Hi Jonathan abd Cherie -
I am not sure what project you are referring to - now I am curious - ha!

Jonathan excerpted a few paragraphs from the MA thesis by Amy Rosenberg - Amy felt that there was not much need for punctuation when writing ASL also, and I also agree that the basic Period (End of Thought) and Comma (Pause) are enough Punctuation for writing ASL - The other symbols we have are not required but can be used…

What is really at issue here is how we started to use the Semi-Colon symbol, which is one thick line with one thin line, which represents a stop combined with a pause (Pause-Stop), to be placed at the end of a sentence or phrase that poses a question, combined with the Head Arrow that pushes the Head forward to show the question, combined with any Facial Expressions needed to show the question-

So by combining Facial Expressions, Head Movements and a Pause-Stop punctuation symbol, we created a standard way to write questions.

Take a look at the attached page from the SignWriting Basics Instruction Manual. Notice I called the Semi-Colon a “Question Mark”, referring to the feeling of a pause-stop at the end of a question…
