This is wonderful.  I stidied in Brazil and there were often signs that the system I was working with SW2010 that did not include in its graphemes. To have LIBRAS community attached as a joint venture and consulting body would make this a truly monumental break-through.

Thank you, Steve, for the extensive history of the ISWA 2010, which was a big undertaking at the time and the ISWA 2010 is now established in software programs around the world.
Let's explore the "easy way" to add a few new handshapes first - without changing existing software as much as possible.
Thank you for thinking of it -  Val ;-)

Profo Rubens Almeida,
Thank you for pushing forward.  We are truly blessed.
The history of the ISWA 2010 extends back to 1986.  You can read more here:https://steveslevinski.me/#standard2010
In principle, Valerie and I both support the inclusion of additional hand shapes.  We can easily support a dozen new hand shapes.  More than that and things become complicated.  I will need to do a statistical analysis of our current texts to see how many additional hand shapes we can fit the easy way.  The easy way could be available in the current SignPuddle and SignMaker software as soon as the new fonts are ready.
If you really need over 30 hand shapes, then things might become more complicated.  We would need to add an extension mechanism to the ISWA.  This would not be available in the current software without significant work.
Thanks again for this work.-Steve

The goals of the present research are toinvestigate, share, collect and register the Handshapes (HS) of the BrazilianSign Language (LIBRAS) to the modality Writing of LIBRAS by the systemSignWriting. It is about a proposal to complement the International Alphabet ofSignWriting proposed by Valerie Sutton and Adam Frost in 2010.

This initiative originated from the need to remedythe lack of many graphemes (symbols) of Writing of LIBRAS-SignWriting,referring to LIBRAS’ Handshapes (HS) in the main software of textualproduction, transcription, and registration of LIBRA’s written form by theSignWriting system, such as SignPuddle and SignMaker software, among othersdeveloped by the Programmer and System Analyst Steve Slevinsky. This researchis exceptionally relevant for the deaf Brazilian community because the majorityof published works produced in LIBRAS’ written modality for the deaf public aredeveloped through a computational system. That means, specific software is usedthat allows textual production of LIBRAS through the SignWriting system.Despite that, this software does not englobe all graphemes (symbols) of theSignWriting system referring to the graphic representation of LIBRAS’ HS,entailing in its turn, difficulties for writers, translators and researchers inthis sense.

we propose the application of the second step whichwe developed in the form of a Public Consultation on an online platform. Thisinvolves sharing the present study with society as a whole, especially with thedeaf Brazilian community that uses the LIBRAS’ written modality through theSignWriting system. In this process, we hope to incite many people to shareother HS that, until now, are not present in this inventory or in the proposedinventory by Sutton & Frost either, the latter who is also available forconsultation on the platform.

Therefore, the expected result with this study isthat the investigated and catalogued HS by the collaborative work done throughpublic consultation and its respective registers in this research are that theyare evaluated and validated by the system’s inventor, Valerie Sutton and herteam, to posteriorly be implemented in the main software of textual production, transcription, and registration of LIBRAS’ written form by the SignWritingsystem. In this perspective, all the Brazilian users of the Written SignLanguage through the SignWriting system will be able to do any production inreference of the Handshapes, that means, without any preoccupations with theHandshape that will be used because there won’t be any past barrier that forcedits users to take alternative means to do so.

To each Libras user, pleasesend any handshape. We appreciate it.
