Video in Europe is formatted to a standard called PAL.  This is what

Stefan was speaking of.  Video in the US is formatted to a standard

called NTSC.  The two are not very compatible, unfortunately.  MPEG2 is

the newer movie compression algorhythm (I can't spell in English,

either).  If one places a movie that is a PAL movie originally into

MPEG2, it would require decoding by a PAL type device; if Stefan sent

you a video tape made in Europe, you would have the same difficulty

with a USA type NTSC VCR trying to play it.  Also if I were to send an

NTSC type movie to Stefan, he would necessarily have to find a NTSC

machine to play it on, because those aren't common in Germany, just as

PAL is not common in the USA.  There IS equipment that can play both

formats.  My Son in Ukraine owns a VCR that will play either, although

it does work better with PAL.  His PAL home movies will NOT play on my

home VCR, for all the now obvious reasons I have mentioned.  I hope
