<html><div style='background-color:'><P>I believe a literature base forms a strong foundation for a culture, and video isn't portable and can't be 'scanned' like writing can. I think writing sign languages doesn't take anything away from them, it just adds. I've never understood people who are against another form of expression. The use of a writing system for signed languages in no way precludes the use of other forms (e.g., video, internet). I feel video is the direct analogue of speech, and all that means is that without SignWriting, signed languages have no analogue of the written word. And I feel that's a shame.</P>
<P>There was a posting to this list that also talked about how when the English writing system was still not very widespread, there was also a lot of resistance to using it. I think people solely fear change, and that's that. :)</P>
