I have also become excited about a new way to teach sign language where the student actually does not do any signing at first but just watches signing around him/her and responds to instructions ("Go get the paper", "Bring the book to me.", etc.) for a period of about 2-3 weeks (assuming a class that meets daily). After that, the students begin to respond in sign language. I observed this method with one sign language class and students were signing much more naturally than students who started signing from day one. The reason for this approach is that observing the language for this initial period causes the brain
