Several places the facial expression changes, or the head nods, as a grammatical marker. I put them at the beginning and the end of the movement, particularly the fingerspelling as the head goes up and then down sequentially. I had to go over the video frame my frame to catch some fingerspelling, but this is as clear as I know how. With facial expressions that hold over a sign, I usually mark the beginning facial expression with a tension marker (to hold in place), and then mark the next time the expression changes the same way.

Charles Butler, Editor, Sign Writing Instructor

<div

I have to agree with this 'timing' statement on horizontal vs. vertical for faces and spellings. I tend to write fingerspelling horizonatlly simply because it looks more that way than vertical when I watch a live signer.

A related issue is how to represent a facial expression that encompasses several signs. Of course, it can be written over each sign separately, but it seems a waste of time and a partial misrepresentation, almost as if the facial expression stops and starts. I think I have asked this question before but can't recall the answer. It seems like it would be useful to have some sort of punctuation or symbol that shows a portion of the signing 'holds' while other parts move on, like a bracket of some kind. Is there such a thing that I haven't learned about yet?

Natasha Escalada-Westland, M.Ed. (D/HH), Certified Interpreter - NIC

I remember some discussions of this when I was writing Cat in the Hat. Some faces I wrote vertically, because certain points of the face had to match certain points in the signing, but sometimes it was mouthing that went with the sign, and I wrote that horizontally. It was a timing issue, mostly, If I recall correctly. Like the vertical spelling of Charles someone recently wrote in... the timing of the head nod has to match the timing of the spelling just so. I'll have to see if I can find that conversation again. To me, horizontal feels like 'all at once' and vertical feels sequential.

cherie
Georgia School for the Deaf
