The concept of signed languages and SignWriting are a challenge for most people to understand. Translating from one sign language to another is not a simple process as the same handshape and movement can mean drastically different things and the same "meaning" in a spoken language can be signed in drastically different ways as sign languages are as indigenous as any other language, they are not a magically "universal" language. <br></span></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_1_1439328262623_31736"><br><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1439328262623_31659"></span></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_1_1439328262623_31843"><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1439328262623_31659">SignWriting is a "phonetic alphabet" for signed languages so your concepts could work in a general sense for a child to watch a game, write down the signs he/she would use to convey a soccer game and then try to teach his family those signs.</span></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_1_1439328262623_31983"><br><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1439328262623_31659"></span></div><div><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1439328262623_31659">The Deaf clubs in Brazil in Pelotas, Brazil have used SignWriting for games and labels on everything in the clubs, and there are various games being developed (like Bingo) by several other writers. <br></span></div><div id="yui_3_16_0_1_1439328262623_31846"><br><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1439328262623_31659"></span></div><div dir="ltr" id="yui_3_16_0_1_1439328262623_31848"><span id="yui_3_16_0_1_1439328262623_31659">But teaching those signs does not convey the grammar of a language, just like a string of Spanish words does not convey anything in English. You may teach individual signs, and that will encourage a family to learn their local sign language. Mexican sign language has at least three different dialects (I have friends from Mexico) and we do not have enough linguists currently working in Mexico to compile the dictionaries. I don't know what the Summer Institute of Linguistics is currently doing, as they were some of the consultants on the encyclopedic dictionary of Brazilian Sign Language (LIBRAS) called DEIT Libras. Similar to a game of Scrabble, where the same <br>chips can be used in different countries, but because the context is different, the interpretation <br>is different.<br><br>Yesterday night I had the idea of creating a deck of cards with just one or two hands printed <br>on one side. One card at a time the players will take turns to guess the movement, position <br>and expressions that are missing and finally guess the word. <br>Then technology part comes in when players can use a tablet to scan these cards to see an <br>image/animation/video of the correct word . <br><br>I'm curious to know what would happen if the same deck of cards is played by signers from <br>different parts of the world. Would all of them come up with different words that use the same <br>handshape? Would it be an engaging activity for everyone? <br><br>Something that I'm aiming for in the creation of this game is to allow the players to build their <br>own libraries of words. I'm imagining a scenario where a deaf child wants to teach his cousins <br>the MSL words related to soccer.
