When you say the "viewer" I believe you mean a person who is looking at a video, and that person is facing the signer? Of course that is the "Receptive Viewer".</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">But when we write SignWriting, we are writing expressively, which means that we view the sign from the signer's perspective, as if we are standing behind the signer's back and seeing the hands as if they are our own...</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">So to explain it from the terminology that I am used to...from the Expressive perspective... in the sign for "CLOSE A Door", the thumbs paint the movement in the air towards your chest to close at the end...the signer is "viewing" his or her thumbs...and not switching right side with left side...</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">So if you start the sign with the palms facing the chest because the doors are open, and then the thumbs curve towards the body and then close touching each other... So in the sign for Door in ASL, it is ususally the thumbs that are painting the movement's path...because the doors are opening and closing back towards the chest...see attached:</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><img apple-inline="yes" id="35F7FC10-B2EF-4BA5-BA78-E2F7CC5D09D5" src="cid:495101BB-677D-43A9-AFAF-B0041401B234" class=""></div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">The thumbs are painting the paths in the sign for DOOR in ASL towards the body - I don't know how else to explain it..</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">But if you have another kind of door where the door is opening away from your body - that is an unusual door but I guess in some corporate buildings they might have such a swing out with big glass doors or something - but that is not the ususal sign for door in ASL...so most doors are opening with the thumbs but if it is a door that you push forward to get out then the baby finger, which curves forward aways from the body, could be used to push a door open forward... it is a matter of the "feeling" of the direction of the swing of the door - is it opening towards you or away from you - the signer - you the reader are the signer, not the video viewer -</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">Val ;-)</div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class=""><br class=""></div><div class="">---------------------------------------------<br class=""><div><br class=""><blockquote type="cite" class=""><div class="">On Feb 5, 2018, at 6:16 PM, <a href="mailto:rchannon1@VERIZON.NET" class="">rchannon1@VERIZON.NET</a> wrote:</div><br class="Apple-interchange-newline"><div class=""><div class="WordSection1" style="page: WordSection1; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 18px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;"><div style="margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 11pt; font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;" class="">Hi Valerie, I’ve started looking through the lessons.
