Dear Tibeto-Burman-linguists,

we would like to invite you to the Speech Units workshop which is organised in a joint effort between the Department of Comparative Language Science and the Department of Computational Linguistics at the University of Zurich, together with the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Evolving Language.

The workshop Speech Units (17-19 April 2023) offers a forum for the discussion of the experimental study of speech data and aims at providing training for those interested in engaging with the topic. The workshop invites contributions dealing with the speech production and structure of word, word-like, and intonational units in child and adult speech from diverse languages and language varieties. We welcome phoneticians and fieldworkers who are interested in phonetic and phonological descriptions of under-documented languages and the use of experimental methods for this purpose.

In this three-day workshop the first two days are reserved for presentations and the third day offers hands-on sessions providing training on experimental methods for data collection and analysis. The hands-on workshop is specifically aimed at (junior) researchers and fieldworkers interested in acquiring methods and best practice in phonetic data collection. The number of attendants on the third day is restricted to 40 and participants are kindly requested to express their interest beforehand, by 15th January 2023.

Submission deadline: 15th November 2022
