Budapesti Uráli Műhely 6.
Uráli HANGoskodó

2008. január 11-12.

ELSŐ KÖRLEVÉL

Kedves Kolléga!

A Magyar Tudományos Akadémia Nyelvtudományi Intézetének Finnugor osztálya

nagy hatású, a finnségi prozódiát tárgyaló tanulmányaira, McRobbie-Utasi
Zita számi fonetikára irányuló kutatásaira, Alekszej Kocsetov leírásaira a

kutatók számára olyan fórumot biztosítson, amelynek tematikája a hang
akusztikus fonetikától kezdve, fonológiai leírásokon át egészen a
szótagszerkezetig – elsősorban a kisebb uráli nyelvek vonatkozásában.

fogadjuk a kevésbé kutatott uráli nyelvekről szóló nem-történeti szempontú
leírásokat. A jól bevált gyakorlat szerint konferenciáink műhelyjellegét
kívánjuk hangsúlyozni. Az előadásokat követő kötetlen viták a problémák
sokkal alaposabb tárgyalását teszik lehetővé, mint a szokásos hozzászólások
és válaszok. Szokásunkhoz híven elhangoznak majd általános kérdéseket
taglaló plenáris előadások is, valamint a BUM történetében először
posztereket is várunk.

A műhely nyelve elsősorban magyar (angol).

A részvételi díj 80 euró, mely az előadások elektronikus megjelentetését,
büféköltségeket és egy vacsorát foglal magában.

Az aktuális információk szeptember végétől elérhetők lesznek az alábbi
honlapon:

Budapest Uralic Workshop 6.
Sounds of Uralic Languages

FIRST CIRCULAR AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Dear Colleague,

The Finno-Ugric Department of Linguistic Institute, Hungarian Academy of
Sciences has the pleasure of inviting you to participate in BUW 6 to be held
in January, 11–12, 2008, Budapest. We modified the traditional autumn date
again considering that the Finno-Ugric Department of University of Szeged is
organizing a conference commemorating Tibor Mikola in January 2008, as some
of the foreign participants of BUW may be interested in the Szeged
conference as well.

One might say that phonological or phonetic descriptions are not in the
focus of Uralic studies nowadays. Nevertheless time to time relevant
publications, articles and books appear illuminating a neglected or marginal
question or discussing a repeatedly raised problem from a different
aspect, not to mention morphonological descriptions. It is sufficient to
hint to the seminal studies of Ilse Lehiste's and her co-authors' on the
prosody of Finnic, Zita McRobbie-Utasi's researches in Saami phonetics,
Alexei Kochetov's descriptions of certain acoustic details of Permic
variations, Niina Aasmäe's and Zsuzsa Várnai's studies on Erzya vs. Nganasan
syllables, etc. To emphasize the importance of the subject is not essential:
irrespective of the theoretical framework, the treatment of 'sound' is a
relevant topic in Uralistics. The purpose of the workshop is to bring
together researchers of phonology and phonetics of the Uralic languages,
covering all, phonological and phonetic aspects of 'sound' ranging from
articulatory or acoustic phonetics to the syllable structure or the
phonology of minor Uralic languages. We invite papers addressing
theoretical questions as well as papers taking a specific, empirical
viewpoint on one or more Uralic languages. Presentations on lesser-studied
languages or dialects and non-historical descriptions are especially
welcomed. The conference will include plenary talks on general questions by
internationally renowned experts, and oral presentations, as well as
posters.

Similarly to the previous BUWs, we are planning to lay emphasis on the
workshop character of the sessions. These round-table discussions following
the presentations are intended to be longer and more detailed than the
ordinary conference questions and comments.

The working language of the sessions is Hungarian (English).

The registration fee is 80 euros, which will cover the conference costs, the
workshop supper, and electronic publication.

Please forward this workshop call to anyone who might be interested in its
topic.

Deadlines:
Deadline for submitting abstracts: 15 Sep 2008.
Information on the acceptance of abstracts: 1 Oct 2007.
