VIRSU Symposium (Finno-Ugric target languages)
Piliscsaba, Hungary, between 9 and 14 August 2010
 
 
Within the framework of the 11th Congressus Internationalis
Finno-Ugristarum, to be hosted by the University of Piliscsaba, Hungary,
9-14 August 2010, the VIRSU project (which is devoted to the study of
Finno-Ugric target languages) plans to organize its own symposium. VIRSU
(http://www.joensuu.fi/suomi/virsu/), originally a cooperation project for
teachers of Estonian or Finnish as a foreign language, has expanded its
range of languages, and its aim is now to create connections between all
linguists working with any of the Finno-Ugric target (foreign or second)
languages.

The goal of the symposium is to compare the specific questions involved in
the learning and teaching of Finno-Ugric languages, to analyze the language
situations in the countries where Finno-Ugric languages are spoken, and to
create the prerequisites for cooperation between researchers and teachers in
the field.

The symposium will concentrate on the following questions:

­     What challenges does the study of Finno-Ugric languages pose to the
study of language learning in general?

­     What are the new challenges to be met? In particular, how should we
systematically research the processes of language learning and interaction?
And how should diachronic and follow-up studies be planned?

­     What is the role of bilingualism in Finno-Ugric contexts?

­     What is the role of the source/first language in learning Finno-Ugric
languages?

­     How can we utilize language technology in our teaching?

­     How should relatedness or similarity between source and target
languages be taken into consideration when teaching Finno-Ugric languages?

The keynote speech, given by Johanna Laakso, will be on The Finno-Ugric
foundations of language teaching. The symposium will end with a general
discussion on the future perspectives of the VIRSU project.

Regrettably, the number of papers that can be accepted for presentation at
the symposium will have to be restricted. The organizing committee ­ Prof.
Orsolya Nádor (Hungary), Dr. Annekatrin Kaivapalu (Estonia), and the
undersigned ­ will select 10-12 papers with the most generally applicable
connections with the main themes of the symposium. Each paper will be
allotted 20 minutes for its presentation and 10 minutes for discussion.

Please send an abstract of max. 300 words, in English, by 31 May 2008, to
johanna.laakso at univie.ac.at. More detailed information about registration
for the symposium will be given in the next circular, in October 2008, by
which time further information will also be available about the Congressus
Internationalis Fenno-Ugristarum in general. (The first circular with
instructions for registration is already available on the congress home
page: http://fu11.btk.ppke.hu/ .) In our next circular there will also be
information about the publication of the papers.

According to the traditional language policy of the CIFU, papers can be
presented in English, German, Russian or one of the three largest
Finno-Ugric languages (Hungarian, Finnish, Estonian). However, the abstracts
of all symposium contributions must be available in English.

We cordially invite everyone interested in these themes to participate in
the symposium.
