Workshop
Language contact - linguistic outcomes
June 18-19, 2009
University of Tromsø

Description
The linguistic outcomes of language contact have been subject to systematic
investigations for more than fifty years, counting Uriel Weinreich¹s book
from 1953, Languages in contact, as the first substantial contribution to
the research field. One of the main goals in language contact research is to
account for language contact as a mechanism in processes of linguistic
variation and change. Important questions are: What are the linguistic
outcomes of language contact? How does language contact contribute to
linguistic developments within the languages in contact? In what ways is
language contact interrelated with other linguistic and sociolinguistic
processes at work in the involved languages?
Inspired by Weinreich¹s integrative approach the workshop Language contact
linguistic outcomes bring together scholars from different research
traditions in order to shed light on the linguistic outcomes of language
contact under different social conditions.
