Dear URA-LISTers,

sad news from yesterday's "Postimees" ( http://www.postimees.ee/478788/prantsusmaal-suri-esseist-fanny-de-sivers/ ): Fanny de Sivers, expatriate Estonian linguist, essayist and philosopher, passed away yesterday, at the age of almost 91 years.

Fanny de Sivers (née Isak) was born in Pärnu in 1920. She started her studies before the war at the university of Tartu, continued in Breslau (Wroclaw), Würzburg and Paris, and wrote her Licentiate's thesis on general phonetics and Finno-Ugric languages at the university of Lund. She published many studies on Finnic languages, general linguistics, translation theory and ethnolinguistics, and gave numerous guest lectures (among other things, she returned to the University of Tartu as a visiting professor in 1993-95). Non-linguists know her as an essayist who wrote about various aspects of culture and philosophy with devotion and esprit.

With condolences to her colleagues, friends and all who learnt to know and respect her wit, sense of humor and truly European esprit

JL
