[Ura-list] Petition for the Faculty of Udmurt philology in Izhevsk

Dear URA-LIST Community,

the authorities in the Udmurt Republic, Russia, are planning to close the faculty of Udmurt philology at the University of Izhevsk. This institution is the only one of its kind in Russia (and the world) where specialists of the Udmurt language are trained; note that Udmurt is a state language alongside Russian in the Republic of Udmurtia, and that the Russian Federation has committed itself to supporting the rights of its citizens to maintain, develop and study their native languages. Abolishing the faculty of Udmurt philology as an independent unit of research and education will jeopardize the education of language specialists and the future of the Udmurt language.
