Sad news from Petrozavodsk: Aleksandra Vasil’evna Punžina has passed away on December 30.

Aleksandra Punžina was born in Tver’ (at that time, known as Kalinin) in 1934. She grew up in the traditionally Tver’ Karelian Tolmači, then studied at the University of Petrozavodsk and worked from 1966 on at the Karelian Institute of Language, Literature, and History. Her candidate’s thesis on Tver’ Karelian was examined at the University of Tartu in 1977. She was one of the leading experts of Tver’ Karelian, author of the Tver’ Karelian-Russian dictionary which appeared in 1994, and of the Tver’ Karelian maps in the Karelian Dialect Atlas of 1997.

As Marja Torikka writes in her beautiful obituary (in Finnish) on the FB site of "Tverinkarjalaisten ystävät" (https://www.facebook.com/tverinkarjalaistenystavat/posts/2791837967694927 <https://www.facebook.com/tverinkarjalaistenystavat/posts/2791837967694927>), Aleksandra Punžina’s contribution to the research and cultivation of Tver’ Karelian has been of immeasurable importance.

With condolences to all the friends of this knowledgeable, friendly and helpful colleague,

jl
