Dear all,

Those of you on social media will already be aware of this, but
something that press coverage of yesterday's shooting at Charles
University in Prague for wider audiences does not include: it largely
took place around and at the Department of Finnish Studies and
tragically, Jan Dlask, distinguished scholar, translator, and teacher of
Finnish and esp. Finland-Swedish literature, lost his life. On the
social media platform formerly known on Twitter, people are finding
solace in the beautiful words of Z. Topelius's "Sparven om julmorgonen /
Varpunen jouluaamuna" ... translated into Czech by Jan Dlask:

There clearly are no words for such an unspeakable tragedy. All I can
think of is to share the warmest possible thoughts with his family,
friends, colleagues, and students, and with all those to whom other
victims of this senseless brutality were near and dear.

Jeremy
