lang="EN-GB">Folklore research has always been
one of the core fields of scholarly activity in Finno-Ugric studies. As
a
consequence of their relatively late literarisation many Finno-Ugric
languages
have preserved a rich stock of folk poetry and oral traditions which
formed the
basis for different fields of research including linguistics,
ethnography,
ethnology, cultural anthropology, comparative mythology and literary
and
cultural studies in general. Finno-Ugric folklore research has also
played an
important role internationally as shown by the fact that one of the
most
distinguished monograph series of the field (<i style="">Folklore
Fellow Communications</i>) is edited in Finland and that the
international scientific community uses a classification system for
fairy tales
initiated by a Finnish scholar (ATU = Aarne / Thompson / Uther).<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span
style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"
lang="EN-GB">The aim of this conference is to
combine this valuable Finno-Ugric research experience with modern
methods and
to bring together scholars from different disciplines and different
fields of
study such as linguists, folklorists, literary critics and others. The
main
question is how Finno-Ugric studies have contributed to international
research
in the respective field, and vice versa, how international research
tendencies
have been and can be applied in the study of specific Finno-Ugric
languages and
cultures.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;"><span
style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif";"
lang="EN-GB">Answers to these more general
questions should be sought in concrete case studies dealing with
specific
languages, cultures, mythologies or oral traditions. Detailed studies
on single
phenomena are as welcome as broader comparative investigations; no
specific
method is preferred, and especially implementations of more recent
concepts
like the post-colonial perspective, ethnic studies or culturalism are
very
welcome; papers are admitted from all disciplines and fields of study,
the only
prerequisite being that at least one Finno-Ugric language be involved.
However,
as the general approach should be based on language, papers on e.g.
folk
dancing or knitting techniques are not expected.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

and German. Scholars who wish to present a paper at this symposium are
invited
to submit a title and brief outline (250 words) to the organising
committee not

sent out by 15 January 2011. The papers should be 20 minutes in length
(15 000
characters). With discussion included, each speaker will have 30
minutes at
her/his disposal. The registration fee will be € 75 until 1 April 2011,
after
which it will be 100 €. The organisers plan to publish a peer-reviewed
selection of the (possibly extended) papers from the symposium in the
series <span style="font-variant: small-caps;">Studia Fenno-Ugrica
Groningana</span>.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
