(ICNGL10 was
organized in Reykjavik in 1998.) We hope you share our enthusiasm with
continuing the ICNGL tradition and we look forward to seeing you in
Freiburg (iBr) in the south of Germany in late April in 2012: spring
will already then be there to greet all northeners and others alike!

You are most cordially welcome!

ICNGL11

The 11th International Conference of Nordic and General Linguistics,
organized under the auspices of the Nordic Association of Linguists,
will take place at Freiburg University April 18th-20th, 2012. The
ICNGL conference series provides an open forum for linguistic research
in order to facilitate the exchange of ideas on Nordic (including
Germanic, Finnic, Saamic and Greenlandic) and other languages, between
researchers from the Nordic countries and elsewhere. Its main goals
are to create and strengthen connections between researchers working
on different languages, with different methodological and theoretical
approaches. The Freiburg conference will have a special focus on
language contact.

ICNGL 11 will be the second conference of this series taking place
outside the Nordic countries (after ICNGL 3, which took place at the
University of Texas, Austin, 1978.) The following speakers have
accepted our invitation to deliver plenary lectures:

Lars-Olof Delsing (Lund)
Frans Gregersen (Copenhagen)
Auli Hakulinen (Helsinki)
Martin Hilpert (Freiburg)
Anneli Sarhimaa (Mainz)
Sarah Thomason (Ann Arbor, Michigan)

Call for papers

In keeping with the goals of the conference series, we invite
abstracts for 20-minute papers or for posters on research topics in
Nordic and General linguistics. We especially welcome papers relating
to the conference topic of language contact in the Nordic area or
concerning Nordic languages elsewhere, but also encourage submissions
on issues such as 1) field linguistics, 2) areal typology, 3)
grammaticalization, 4) pragmatics, 5) intercomprehension, and 6)
innovative methodologies. Abstracts should be between 300 and 500
words in length and should fit on a single sheet of paper. References,
examples, and diagrams can be placed on a second sheet. Abstracts are
to be submitted via easy abstracts. Abstract submission opens on June
1st, 2011. The deadline is November 1st, 2011. Authors will be
notified of the outcome of their abstract on December 15th, 2011.

In addition to individual presentations, we invite proposals for theme
sessions. These should consist of five to six papers that address a
common topic of interest. Theme session proposals should be 500-700
words in length, excluding references, and should list the prospective
speakers and their presentation titles. They are to be submitted via
easy abstracts, but theme session organizers are encouraged to contact
us in advance.
