<html><head></head><body style="word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space; ">As announced on the Hungarian nyelvész-infó list (see below, in Hungarian), professor emeritus István Nyirkos passed away on the 2nd of May, in the 80th year of his life.<div><br></div><div>István Nyirkos spent perhaps the most important part of his active years in the service of the University of Debrecen, as assistant and adjunct professor, full professor and finally head of the Finno-Ugric Department in the 1990s. His main areas of expertise were Hungarian dialectology and historical linguistics, but alongside these, he gave an invaluable contribution to Hungarian studies in Finland as the lecturer of Hungarian at the University of Helsinki in the 1960s, as the director of the Hungarian Cultural Centre in Helsinki in the years 1987–1993, as the author of Hungarian textbooks and dictionaries, and as an active promoter of Hungarian-Finnish cultural relationships.</div><div><br></div><div>His funeral service will take place in Debrecen on Friday, May 17.</div><div><br></div><div>With condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, on behalf of the URA-LIST community</div><div>JL</div><div><div apple-content-edited="true">
