conference at Brock University, St. Catharines, Ontario Province, not far from

Humanities and Social Sciences (CFHSS) will host our meeting, along with 73 other

academic associations, at its annual Congress from Saturday, May 24 through

Friday, May 30, 2014. St. Catharines, located right by Niagara Falls, is

southwest of the greater Toronto hub and is 120 km. from Toronto itself,

Canada’s most populous city and a major North American cultural destination. Brock

University is easily accessible from Toronto’s major airport, some 80 km. away

May 2012 FUSAC association meeting in Waterloo, Ontario Province, lasted three

days and was a resounding success. Our participants traveled from Europe, Russia,

Australia, and from all parts of North America. They presented cutting-edge

research on linguistic, literary, historical, and sociological topics

concerning the Finno-Ugric experience in the Baltic region, Eastern Europe,

Russia,<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">  </span>North America, and in the

Western Pacific Basin. An Estonian folk musical instrument demonstration, a

round-table discussion, a book exhibit of recent scholarship in Uralic studies,

an evening of Estonian and Russian (Uralic-oriented) Federation films, and a gratifyingly

collegial dinner at a local ethnic restaurant imparted special flair to our

meeting. <span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>We shall endeavor to infuse the

same spirit and accomplishments into our 2014 meeting in order to maintain the

Finno-Ugric studies. The Finno-Ugric peoples subsume a large number of peoples

(e.g., Estonians, Finns, Hungarians, Karelians, Mordvins, Sami, Udmurts,

Voguls, Votyaks) who in the past inhabited<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> 

</span>the northern and even central regions of much of Western Eurasia and

Northwestern Siberia. Their cultural and social development has been diverse

and self-generative. Both directly and indirectly Finno-Ugric peoples over the

millennia have exerted profound influences upon the larger Indo-European and

km to the southwest of downtown Toronto and 80 km to the northeast of St.

Catharines.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">  </span>By having our first actual

meeting day on a Sunday, this should enable members to travel to St. Catharines

are two methods of travel between Pearson and Brock University, St. Catharines.

The first are Congress shuttle busses that travel non-stop between Pearson and Brock

University. Estimated time of travel is over one hour. The Canadian Federation

will provide more details later about these shuttles. <o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:

normal"><span lang="EN-US"><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:36.0pt"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal"><span lang="EN-US">The second method is to take

another form of direct bus transportation from Pearson International Airport to

Brock University. That is through Niagara Bus and its 90 minute journey costs $80

round trip. <span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>One purchases his/her ticket

online, and this bus travels every day at all hours of the day and night. <o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:36.0pt"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal"><span lang="EN-US"><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:

normal"><span lang="EN-US"><span style="mso-tab-count:1">            </span>Canadian

FUSAC delegates electing to travel by air (Air Canada, Toronto Air Lines, Porter

Air, West Jet, Bearskin) can fly to Pearson, Billy Bishop Airport (formerly Toronto

City Center Airport/Toronto Island Airport), and to Niagara District Airport. Travelers

arriving at Billy Bishop Airport in Toronto would have to take a bus, taxi, or

the underground (metro, subway) to Union Station (see <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:

normal">Train and <i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">Bus below).

From Niagara District Airport to downtown St. Catharines, one would take either

a city bus or a taxi. <o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:

normal"><span lang="EN-US"><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:

normal"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal"><span lang="EN-US">Train and Bus</span></i><span lang="EN-US"><o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:

normal"><span lang="EN-US"><span style="mso-tab-count:1">            </span>Canadian

delegates traveling by train from the west and east of Toronto will detrain at

Union Station and can take a GO bus from there to St. Catharines Fairview Mall.

There is no train service to St. Catharines except on Summer weekends. The

Union Station buses to St. Catharines on Saturday, May 24, a projected date of

arrival, leave Union Station at 11:52, 13:52, 14:52, 15:52, 17:52, 19:52, 23:43.

The bus journey lasts one hour and 48 minutes. The return trip on Wednesday,

May 28, a projected date of departure, has buses departing St. Catharines

Fairview Mall for Union Station, Toronto at 6:39, 7:39, 8:55, 10:55, 12:55,

14:10, and 15:27. The return trip averages two hours and 15 minutes. The normal

round trip fare<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">  </span>is $30 CAD. <span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>There is also Coach Canada, a second bus line,

that travels r.t. from Union Station to downtown St. Catharines. A third bus

line is Greyhound.<o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:

normal"><span lang="EN-US"><span style="mso-tab-count:1">            </span><o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:

St. Catharines Fairview Mall to Brock University and back, there are city buses

that take five minutes to transit back and forth; they cost $2.50 or $2.75 per

major northwest-southeast highway/freeway one travels in order to reach

Waterloo is the QEW 405, and then at exit no. 49 on the QEW 405 one takes the

QEW 406 south for about 10 kilometers to St. Davids Road. At the exit for St.

David’s Road, turn right and head west for about two to three kilometers and

St. David’s Road leads directly into the Brock University campus. <o:p></o:p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:

normal"><span lang="EN-US"><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:36.0pt"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal"><span lang="EN-US">For U.S. delegates

traveling from the Mid-West, the best port of entry in terms of distance is

through Detroit via the Friendship Bridge into Windsor and then traveling

northeast along the QEW 410 to the Woodstock turnoff east onto to the QEW 403

towards the QEW 405, where one will turn south until reaching Exit no. 49 for

the QEW 406. <o:p></o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:36.0pt"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal"><span lang="EN-US"><o:p> </o:p></span></b></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:36.0pt"><b style="mso-bidi-font-weight:normal"><span lang="EN-US">For U.S. delegates

traveling from the East Coast and New York State, the best route is through the

Lewiston-Niagara Falls port of entry. Try to avoid the Buffalo port of entry,

which takes more time. Allow 30 minutes plus from clearing Canadian border

control to reach Brock University. The highway from the border is the QEW 405

that will skirt the Lake Ontario coastline to the east. After about 20 kilometers,

turn south onto the QEW 406 and then get off at St. David’s Road west to Brock

particularly one edge (the Niagara Escarpment). There is much to explore

well-contoured to suit the sensitivities of a variety of palettes. Make sure to
