<html><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html charset=windows-1250"></head><body style="word-wrap: break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: after-white-space;">Dear URA-LIST community,<div><br></div><div>as reported on the Hungarian FINNUGOR-L list (see below), Péter Domokos, retired professor of Finno-Ugrian studies at the ELTE university (Budapest) passed away today, at the age of 78 years.</div><div><br></div><div>Born in Gyergyóújfalu (Suseni/Hochfeld), Transylvania in 1936, as the son of the historian and ethnographist Pál Péter Domokos, Péter Domokos studied at the ELTE university and began his work career as a teacher of Hungarian. After five interesting years spent as the lecturer of Hungarian at the University of Leningrad in the late 1950s, he was first employed at the Finno-Ugric Department of the University of Szeged, then at the ELTE in Budapest, where he worked from 1980 until his retirement in 2006 and even after that. Péter Domokos was one of the internationally most famous experts of Finno-Ugric minority literatures (in particular, Udmurt literature) as well as an active champion of the concept of Finno-Ugric literatures and Finno-Ugric literature studies, member and finally president of the Committee of Modern Literary Studies of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and his merits were rewarded with decorations and prizes from Russia, Estonia and Finland as well.</div><div><br></div><div>With his passing, a whole era in the history of Uralic studies comes to an end.</div><div><br></div><div>With condolences to all his colleagues and friends</div><div>JL<br><div apple-content-edited="true">
