The applicant shall work within a project on machine translation from
North Saami to Inari Saami. The project uses a rule-based approach to
translation, based upon the MT platform Apertium. North and Inari Saami
are closely related languages, that due to different normative
traditions differ severely both syntactically, morphologically and
orthographically. The machine translation process will consist of a
grammatical analysis of North Saami, a lexical and grammatical transfer
component, and a component generating the target Inari Saami text.<br class="">

The PhD candidate shall write a thesis related to the research project.
The application shall contain a draft plan for the research plan for the
thesis, related to the profile of the research project. The applicant
may contact professor Trond Trosterud in order to discuss the content of
such a plan.<br class="">

This position requires a Master’s degree in computer science, language
technology or computational linguistics (2 years). In addition the
successful applicant should have earlier experience with rule-based
machine translation.<br class="">
<br class="">
The period of employment is three years, as there are no teaching or
other duties attached to the position. There may arise a possibility of
offering a fourth year of work relevant to the project.<br class="">
<br class="">
Emphasis shall also be attached to personal suitability.<br class="">

Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the
State salary scale code 1017 (or code 1378) (or both codes depending on
qualifications). A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian
Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.<br class="">
