Mátai, a highly respected researcher and teacher of Hungarian historical linguistics, author of many specific and more general works on the history of the Hungarian language, internationally perhaps best known as the author of "Kleine ungarische Sprachgeschichte" (Hamburg: Buske, 2002). D. Mátai Mária nyugalmazott egyetemi docens hosszú betegség után, 2020. szeptember 4-én elhunyt. Kutatóként széleskörű munkásságán belül elsősorban a szófajtörténet terén megjelent munkáival alkotott maradandót. Igazi tanáregyéniség volt, nagy hatással volt tanítványaira, akiknek szakmai életútját évek múltán is figyelemmel kísérte.
