SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL AND AFRICAN STUDIES
UNIVERSITY OF LONDON

Lecturer in the Languages and Cultures of South Asia

£241Ž4K-£353Ž4K p.a. inclusive of London Allowance
Vacancy 04-20

The Department of the Languages and Cultures of South Asia, which
conducts research and teaching based primarily on Bengali, Gujarati,
Hindi, Nepali, Panjabi, Sanskrit, Sinhala, Tamil and Urdu, seeks to
appoint a research-active lecturer to contribute to our ambitious
programmes.
While the vacancy arises from a retirement in the Urdu section and
this language will be our first priority for selection, the
successful candidate will be the one best able to make an outstanding
contribution to South Asian language, literary and cultural studies
through innovative research and teaching and we welcome applications
from specialists in other South Asian languages also. A commitment to
independent and collaborative research and to teaching at all levels
from undergraduate to PhD is essential, and the ability to attract
research funding will be a significant advantage; an ability to
broaden the coverage of our South Asian studies programmes through
courses that will complement our existing strengths in such subjects
as Cinema and Postcolonial Literature will be very welcome.

An application form and further particulars may be obtained from the
Human Resources Department, School of Oriental and African Studies,
Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London, WC1H OXG. (Tel: 020 7898
