AISLS Grants for Language Instruction

The AISLS Colombo centre has received a small grant from the US
Department of Education to support US-based scholars who wish to
acquire or improve language skills. Limited funds are available to
defray the costs of language instruction in Sinhala, Tamil, Pali, or
Arabic. The instruction must take place in Sri Lanka and be obtained
by September 30, 2008. This program cannot cover translation costs,
but it can cover instruction that takes the form of working with a
tutor to translate texts or other material. These awards are available
only to individual members of the AISLS resident in the US who hold a
PhD or equivalent qualification or who are enrolled in a graduate
program at a US university; faculty members or graduate students at
AISLS member institutions; or recipients of a CAORC multi-country
fellowship. Previous recipients of AISLS language instruction grants
are eligible.

To apply, please prepare a brief statement (one page or less) that
includes a description of the proposed instruction and how it supports
your long-range educational or research plans, a proposed timetable,
and a budget. The maximum award will be $300. However, increases may
be possible if there are surplus funds. Proposals will be considered
on an ongoing basis until the funds are exhausted. Proposals should
be sent to John Rogers at rogersjohnd at aol.com

The AISLS Colombo centre can provide awardees advice on finding
suitable instruction.
