The Canadian Association of Applied Linguistics (CAAL/ACLA) cordially invites you to its next online symposium, entitled Critical Issues in Language Education in Canada: Showcasing Student Research. This event will be held on Zoom, on the 31st of March, at 2 pm (Toronto time).

This exciting symposium highlights the work of five emerging scholars from all across Canada. While showcasing their work, the presenters will reflect critically and, through their presentations, reconsider the use of different theoretical and methodological underpinnings, and the ways they have shaped their view in terms of how they situate applied linguistics. By including emerging scholars’ voices, we seek to envision our field in a new light, through a prospective view, all the while discussing some of the existing challenges that we face as our field continues to evolve. The researchers of this symposium not only break new ground, but also actively contribute to an inclusive and just applied linguistics, one that represents all those who have been historically minoritized as well as members with multiple belongings to collective groups.

Thus, the symposium brings together the following emerging scholars:

1) Alexa Ahooja (McGill University): Québec newcomer students’ French language socialization

2) Aide Chen (Western University): Teaching anxiety and resilience in ESL/EAL

3) Magali Forte (Simon Fraser University): Identity assemblages and multilingual becomings in multimodal story production

4) Denise Kennedy (University of Regina): WAH WAH ŠIKWA ONŌSISAH: NAHKAWĒWIN REVITALIZATION THROUGH LIVED EXPERIENCES

5) Ashley Moore (University of British Columbia): Interrogating representational heteronormativity in LINC materials

This event is free of charge and offers a wonderful occasion to exchange ideas, and collectively address some of the issues proposed by our emerging scholars of applied linguistics. It will be held mostly in English, though some presenters will give a bilingual EN-FR talk. Audience members may interact in the language of their choice.

L’Association canadienne de linguistique appliquée (ACLA) vous invite cordialement à son prochain symposium virtuel, qui s’intitule Enjeux critiques en didactique des langues au Canada : mettre en avant la recherche étudiante et qui réunira cinq chercheurs émergents de partout au pays. Cet événement se tiendra par Zoom, le 31 mars 2021, à 14h (heure de Toronto).

Les présentations de ces chercheurs leur permettront de mettre en avant leurs travaux et, de manière critique, de reconsidérer les assises théoriques et méthodologiques à partir desquelles s’érige la linguistique appliquée. En donnant ainsi la parole aux chercheurs émergents, nous espérons envisager notre discipline de façon prospective, et ce, en cernant et en discutant les enjeux auxquels elle fait actuellement face. Puisqu’ils se penchent sur la voix de groupes qui, au fil de l’histoire, ont été mis de côté et marginalisés, ces chercheurs contribuent activement à une linguistique appliquée inclusive et juste pour l’ensemble des collectivités minorisées.

Ainsi le symposium réunira-t-il les chercheurs émergents suivants :

1. Alexa Ahooja (Université McGill) : La socialisation langagière des élèves nouveaux arrivants au Québec

2. Aide Chen (Université Western) : L’anxiété et la résilience des enseignants en ESL/EAL

3. Magali Forte (Université Simon Fraser) : Assemblages identitaires et devenirs plurilingues lors de la production multimodale d’histoires

4. Denise Kennedy (Université de Regina) : WAH WAH ŠIKWA ONŌSISAH : LA REVITALISATION DU NAHKAWĒWIN PAR LES EXPÉRIENCES VÉCUES

5. Ashley Moore (Université de la Colombie-Britannique) : Interroger les représentations hétéronormatives au sein des contenus CLIC

Cet événement gratuit sera une occasion d’échanger et de mettre collectivement l’accent sur les sujets qui intéressent les chercheurs émergents en linguistique appliquée. Il se tiendra principalement en anglais, mais certains présentateurs feront leur conférence de manière bilingue, en français et en anglais. Les membres de l'auditoire peuvent interagir dans la langue de leur choix.
