I have used LBJs/Little Brown Jobs for at least ten years. Picked it up
from birders in Minnesota. Also: LSBs = Little Striped Bastards
The point of these expressions is that no further identification of the
birds was achieved. Another notational device use for partially identified
birds (even by those who don't use scientific nomenclature, which is the
vast majority of birders) is <common or scientific genus or family name> +
"species"
As in
Flycatcher species
Empidonax species (A genus of New World flycatchers)
Gull species
