I previously posted that a South African newspaper described AIDS as
"the silent killer." OCLC Worldcat has 130 titles for "silent killer"--here
are some. The phrase (perhaps first used for hypertension and high blood
pressure) picked up speed in 1970, but was quickly applied to almost every
disease in the 1980s and 1990s:
