Barry This is merely hearsay, but in my younger days I was a bartender for a while, in western Massachustts, near Univ of Mass. I recall that about 1979 or 1980 the drink was said to be the newest, coolest thing to order. It did have the rep for being VERY strong. I would expect that cites much before 1980 are rare or nonexistent. Frank
