Sliced bread has been around since antiquity -- it is probably as
old as civilization. Windows 286 came out some time in the 1980's. I
think the idea is to pick something that was invented in antiquity to
emphasize the length of time since there was a similar achievement. To
some, Windows and Viagra seem like greater achievements than sliced bread
-- but again the expression is used sarcastically.
CHIEF WAHOO ("LOW MAN ON THE TOTEM POLE")
The cartoon CHIEF WAHOO began in November 1936 as THE GREAT GUSTO,
then became BIG CHIEF WAHOO, then CHIEF WAHOO, then CHIEF WAHOO AND STEVE
ROPER, then STEVE ROPER AND WAHOO, and, in 1947, simply STEVE ROPER.
Isn't the mascot of the Cleveland Indians named Wahoo? The Indians have
had that name since the early 1900's (surely before 1936) -- although I
can't say that their mascot was always named Wahoo.
