If you have room in your syllabus, don't forget lexicography in that list
of applied linguistics topics. Sidney Landau's book is very nice as an
intro and it is still in print as well!

I would also check with the American Association for Applied Linguistics,
if you are not already a member. I don't have that web page address at this
computer but email me off-list and I will look it up for you.

If you have a LOT of space in the syllabus, add in semiotics as it applies
to product naming. There was a wonderful article about it in WIRED mag a
few years back and I trot it out every once in a while when asked "What can
linguists do for real money?"

Good luck with your class. I would have enjoyed the opportunity to take a
class like that.
