I have used Bonvillian's book (_Language, Culture, and
Communication_) --am using it now, as a matter of fact, as one of the
texts in an intercultural communication course.
Your concerns about dated references are justified, though. It's the
biggest complaint my students have had about it.
For this particular course, though, I haven't found a text that is
better, in terms of highlighting relevant linguistic issues in ways
that non-linguistics students can understand.
If someone out there can recommend something less dated but similarly
thorough, I would also be interested.
