Can anyone illuminate the origins of the term "red-headed stepchild," especially as it has come to be used in threatening statements like, "I'm going to beat you like a red-headed stepchild."? I haven't been able to find much of anything on it. Thanks. Jerry Miller Franklin College (Ind.)
