In addition to the 1774 Crevecouer reference that Allan prvovided, DARE
III refers to an item in American Speech 17.210 (1942):

"Each autumn there is some public curiosity and speculation over the term
'Indian Summer.'..The first of our American forefathers, then, whoever he
or quite possibly she was, that may have said''Tis but an Indian kind of
summer..,' was only following the early habit among them of
characterizing by the term Indian whatever in the new world looked
something like the real thing but was not."
