Apgars are the scores a baby is given at birth and then about ten minutes
afterwards that add up a bunch of vital signs: how blue they are, how well
they are breathing, stuff like that. It's an eponym; they were developed by
a pediatrician named Virginia(?) Apgar, who died last year.
