To add to my earlier comment:  I might use "back East" for "way way back,"
like Boston, but not for New York, Washington, Philly, etc.; they're "out
East."  Another issue is whether, in writing, we would capitalize the
region or not; I find that I always do for the region, but not for the
simple direction ("traveling west").
