Curious. In 1932-4 (I was 5-7) I lived in at least 9 places in the New
England states. Back then it was "down east".

And in California -- to be specific, in Berkeley, 1973-1981 -- "back east", even
from people who had been born in the Golden State and never left it. I reckon
that's a relic of migrations, both en masse and individual. If your parents came
from the east, they would say "back east" because it's "back there" ("where I
used to live") for them, and you'd learn it from them.
