growing up in rural central maryland in the 1960s, it was always quick and
quiet and quaint with initial kw- but just as always quarter and quart
with k- only. court and quart were homophones. i attributed this to
ignorance when i went away to college in the big city (baltimore) and was
roundly ridiculed for such prole isms.
