"Axe" For Guitar?

Since I get a similar message frequently ("This program has performed an
illegal operation and will be shut down"), I'd like to know what it means
and what to do about it.  Sometimes it appears three times and then
everything is OK; other times it causes a freezing up immediately.  Any tips?
