BACHMAN TURNER OVERDRIVE:
ROCK IS MY LIFE THIS IS MY SONG
The authorized biography by Martin Melhuish (1976)
Pg. 4: If I'm not mistaken, the term "heavy metal" in rock music was coined by music-critic-cum-rock-dreamer, Lester Bangs, whose writings have filled the pages of many a journal devoted to the coverage of the rapidly emerging sub-culture. He must also have been a devotee of science-fiction writer William Burroughs. It was in one of Burroughs' stories, _Nova Express_, that the term first appeared. One of the main characters in this phantasm is Uranian Willie, the Heavy Metal Kid.
That"s the derivation of "Heavy metal" but it seems that BTO would rather not be bunched with the other raucous and rollers in that idiom. "Heavy duty rock" is the monicker they've given their brand of music. "It's not nearly as acidy as 'heavy metal.' It's good, solid, heavy rock, but if pushed any further, it would fall into that acidy, psychedelic vein," Fred Turner once explained.
(NEW YORK PRESS this week has a conversation with the author of a book about Bangs. See www.nypress.com--ed.)
Pg. 19: ...Ritchie Yorke, author of the subjective and highly controversial book on the Canadian rock music scene entitled _Axes, Chops and Hot Licks_...
Pg. 160: "Flugen" is not a word found in any dictionary. Its derivation is more Fox and Allen than Webster. A "flugen," you see, is a person of dubious value. A person who is dispensable. We needn't go into more than that. You probably have the idea.
